Why “Old Town Hill”?
We take our name from the landscape around us. We live in the shadow of Old Town Hill, a drumlin created by a receding glacier approximately 20,000 years ago. “Old Town” is the historic center of Newbury, Massachusetts, settled around a common pasture in the pattern of colonial New England. The Hill rises all of 168 feet (51 meters) above the Great Marsh, an 8,000-hectare salt marsh complex, most of which is protected through public and private conservation ownerships. Thus our name reflects our interest in the nexus of nature, culture, and history of landscapes. The banner image by Kittie Mercer shows the marsh in autumn, with haystacks elevated on “staddles.” |
